It Started with Caregiving
Lumera Heart Project was born from lived experience.
Founded by lifelong friends and caregivers Paula Gambina and Lorna Grote, who know firsthand how caregiving can quietly consume every part of life.
Lorna is a registered nurse who cared for her mother at home while working full time, attending school, and raising her family. She made a promise to keep her mom out of a facility, leaning on family support where she could, but the emotional and physical toll was undeniable.
Paula has spent years as a caregiver as well—first for her military veteran grandfather, and now for her teenage nephew. Balancing caregiving with work, school, and daily life revealed just how quickly burnout can take hold, even when caregiving is rooted in love and commitment.
Our stories are different, but the exhaustion, isolation, and quiet sacrifice are shared by millions of caregivers every day
What We Discovered
As caregivers, we quickly realized something was missing.
Support for caregivers is limited, fragmented, and often out of reach.
Rest is treated like a luxury. Community is hard to find. And caregivers are expected to give endlessly, without space to restore themselves.
Yet one thing became clear: When caregivers are supported, everything improves.
Why Community
Caregiving can feel isolating, but it shouldn’t be.
Community offers relief, understanding, and the comfort of being seen without explanation. It reminds caregivers that their dedication matters—and that support is here to help them thrive.
At Lumera Heart Project, community is essential—not optional.
Why Resilience
Caregiving isn’t always a short chapter, it’s often a long journey.
Resilience isn’t about pushing through burnout. It’s about learning how to rest, reset, and reconnect with yourself so you can continue with strength and clarity.
We believe resilience can be cultivated, with the right support.
What We Do
Lumera Heart Project offers restorative wellness retreats and ongoing community support designed specifically for family caregivers.
Our programs provide:
-
Time and space to rest
-
Nourishing meals and calming environments
-
Tools for stress relief and self-care
-
Connection with others who understand caregiving
Our retreats aren’t an escape from caregiving, they’re a way to sustain it.
Our Belief
Caregivers are the steady heart of families and communities.
And even the strongest hearts need care.
When caregivers are supported, they return stronger, for themselves and for those they love.
That’s the heart of Lumera Heart Project.
